The Software Engineering Manager (Player/Coach) leads a small (6-8 person), high-performing engineering team while actively modernizing our core platform, ACE. This role combines hands-on development, technical leadership, and team mentorship as we evolve our legacy Struts-based system into a modern Micronaut backend and SvelteKit frontend architecture. What skills can you bring to the InterProse team?
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong hands-on coding ability
• Proven experience leading or mentoring engineering teams while remaining technically engaged
• Strong Java experience building modern backend services (Micronaut or similar frameworks preferred)
• Experience modernizing legacy monolithic applications and executing incremental migration strategies
• Frontend experience with modern frameworks (SvelteKit, JavaScript/TypeScript or similar)
• Strong working knowledge of PostgreSQL including performance tuning and schema design
• Experience designing and building RESTful APIs in production environments
• Experience working within AWS environments and cloud-based architectures
• Ability to lead code reviews, enforce engineering standards, and improve overall code quality
• Strong understanding of system design, scalability, and maintainability
• Experience working across both legacy and modern technology stacks
• Ability to balance feature delivery with technical debt reduction and platform modernization goals
• Strong communication skills: The ability to explain concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders and collaborate with the product and leadership teams to align technical execution with business priorities
• Self-starter; organized, accountable, and driven to deliver results in a small team environment
• Design and implement scalable, maintainable services using API-first design principles
• Guide incremental modernization efforts while maintaining production stability and delivery velocity
• Improve: system performance, reliability, deployment processes, CI/CD pipelines, and engineering best practices
• Conduct regular 1:1s and support the growth and development of engineering team members
• Remove blockers quickly and maintain strong execution momentum across the team
